Research suggests that the social effects of internal migration may be substantially different from those associated with international immigration. In this paper, I provide first evidence effect on crime panel data Brazilian microregiões (microregions). Using local labor demand shocks as an instrumental variable, find a 10% increase in in-migration rate translates to 9.4% homicide destination areas. propose is driven by intermediating market and not migrants themselves. Exploring these possible channels, do crime-prone drive results. The only significant locations high past rates, indicating inertia, places small informal sector, suggesting impact conditioned ability markets accommodate migrants. This finding supported negative formal employment rigid positive unemployment among young men, latter explaining most total effect.
